As summer lake life quiets down, Livingston County transforms into a fall wonderland where the rhythm of local life kicks in. Kids prep for school, families cozy up for chilly nights, and the landscape bursts into fiery hues of red, orange, and gold. It’s the perfect time to hop in the car and take in the variety of great scenery, farms, and farm stands scattered along the way to this gem of a destination.
In this fall feature, we hear from local resident and photographer Gina Horan, owner of Gina Horan Reflections Photography Studio in Hemlock, NY. Through her lens and her love of the land, Gina captures what makes fall in Livingston County so magical.

Nature lovers, you’re in for a treat. Hemlock and Canadice Lakes, pristine watershed lakes untouched by development, offer serene beauty from every angle. Whether you're paddling a kayak, cruising in a small watercraft, or strolling along peaceful trails, the stillness and scenery are unbeatable. And, if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a bald eagle soaring above or perched proudly in the trees, just as Gina often does while photographing their nests across the area.
In Livonia, fall isn't just a season, it’s a celebration. The Village goes all in for Halloween, with generations of families decorating historic homes, trick-or-treating, and adding their own flair to the festive fun. Don’t miss the “First Flight” eagle mural in town, a burst of sunset color by artist Justin Suarez that captures the spirit of the season and the majesty of local wildlife.
Pop into Simply Positive, a charming gift shop filled with locally made art and one-of-a-kind wood creations. Right next door, Lake Bistro serves up handmade cinnamon rolls and lattes in an atmosphere as warm as the bread they bake fresh each morning. For a dinner you’ll want to write home about, Ember Wood Fire Grill offers unforgettable wood-fired cuisine inside a historic train station.

Fall is for adventure, and Livingston delivers. Hike the trails around Hemlock and Canadice Lakes, peaceful, untouched, and bursting with color. Or head to Letchworth State Park, the “Grand Canyon of the East,” where waterfalls tumble through glowing forests. If you're lucky, you’ll catch a hot air balloon floating past at sunrise — or better yet, ride one yourself for a memory you’ll never forget.
Come fall, Livingston County isn’t just a place to visit, it’s a place to experience. Breathe it in, photograph it, and let it surprise you.
