Cinderella moments aren't just for storybooks. They happen right here in Rochester, created by women who believe every girl deserves to feel valued and empowered.
Fairy Godmothers of Rochester began about twenty years ago, when Rene Spallina and Cynthia Jackson were inspired by an Oprah segment about a prom dress project in Philadelphia and felt a tug on their hearts. They were determined to start a chapter here. What began in a church basement grew into a full event at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center that dressed hundreds of girls in a single, whirlwind day.
Today the organization fills an even larger need, serving students from across Monroe County and beyond. The dynamics have changed over time, but the heart has not. Their mission remains rooted in dignity, compassion, and the belief that every young woman deserves to feel beautiful and celebrated.
A Boutique Experience With Heart
Prom is a dream many young women cherish. It is a night to belong, feel special, and shine. Yet for many families, the cost can make that dream feel out of reach. Fairy Godmothers of Rochester is a nonprofit dedicated to removing that barrier with grace. This isn't a thrift store. It is a luxury boutique experience where each girl receives personal attention, encouragement, and tender loving care.
When I spoke with President Ami Salzman and board secretary Jennalyn Suda, their passion was contagious and their commitment unwavering. Ami saved the organization during the pandemic, and Jennalyn was once a recipient herself. Together, they understand teens deeply. They understand vulnerability, self‑esteem, and the power of being pampered and celebrated.
The experience is transformative. Many girls arrive reluctant or unsure. Paired with a personal shopper, they explore styles until they find “the one.”
Volunteers gently guide them and help them discover what makes them feel confident. When she lights up, you know she has found her dress. To capture the moment, a photo backdrop awaits so each girl can pose and celebrate her choice.
The dressing room becomes a place of unexpected camaraderie as girls who have never met cheer each other on. For many, it is the first time they have heard a peer say, “You look beautiful.” That moment alone can be life changing, leaving an incredible impression with the girls.
A Dream Come True
This experience feels like stepping into a storybook. It is not the kind of magic that comes from a wand or a swirl of sparkles. It is the kind that happens when a girl is truly empowered and supported. For many young women, prom is a milestone that marks a moment of belonging and making memories.
Ami shared about a young woman who arrived anxious, hiding behind a hoodie and headphones. As she found her dress and felt the warmth of the volunteers, something shifted. She stood there and sang her school musical solo out loud. She walked in quietly and walked out shining.
Another girl, having lost her mother and boyfriend during the pandemic, chose a soft peach gown because it was his favorite color. When she stepped into that dress, she held herself differently. It was a moment of healing, hope, and strength.
Radiance filled the room again when a young woman without arms or legs found her dress and spun around in her wheelchair with joy. These are the moments that remind volunteers why they show up year after year. The impact is real. The transformation is undeniable.
Fairy Godmothers provides the missing pieces. Each girl receives a complete outfit: gown, shoes, jewelry, and purse. On‑site seamstresses provide minor alterations. While the suggested donation is five dollars, the fee is quietly waived for those in need. No girl is ever turned away.
Fairy Godmothers hosts their Last Chance Sale in April, a wonderful opportunity to support the organization and help girls who still need a dress. Need continues year-round. Prom season may be seasonal, but the impact of this work lasts far longer.
As I listened to Ami and Jennalyn share their stories, I was reminded that generosity often begins with a simple act. A donated dress. A few hours of time. A kind word. These small gestures create a ripple effect that reaches far beyond one night. Fairy Godmothers of Rochester is proof that when a community comes together, magic happens.
Donated dresses get a chance to live on, and the meaning extends far beyond prom night. Each gown carries its own legacy, and when it finds a new girl, it begins a new chapter. If the dresses could talk, imagine the stories they would tell.
Your Chance to Be a Fairy Godmother
You do not need a wand or wings to be a Fairy Godmother. You only need a generous heart.
Donations of current‑style, clean, undamaged dresses of all sizes in excellent condition are always needed. Monetary donations and volunteers are essential too. The organization is entirely volunteer‑run, and they welcome patient, kind, physically able individuals who enjoy working with teens.
A Need for a Permanent Home: This year, the organization is facing a new challenge. They are in need of a permanent home. After being displaced from Marketplace Mall, they are operating out of a temporary location. Their hope is that someone in the community will step forward with a space that can become their long‑term home. A stable location would allow them to expand their services and continue serving local teens for years to come.
Fairy Godmothers of Rochester has received endowments from donors who believe deeply in their mission, yet they still rely on ongoing community support to continue creating these life‑changing moments.
