Designers Library, DL Home & Garden, and most recently, City Living Essentials, three sister companies in a one-block area, continue to set the bar for lifestyle and home goods in the Greater Rochester community and beyond. Located across from the original site of the Rochester Central Station building, these businesses reside in beautifully restored Victorian Era buildings, replacing boarded store fronts with beckoning banks of windows.
Designers Library, celebrating 27 years of bringing residential and commercial designers and architects full lines of home goods, carries over 220 of the interior design industry’s most sought-after vendors. 2014 introduced DL Home & Garden with its curated and layered home furnishings retail experience and focus on furniture, rugs, accessories, and gifts. 4,000 sq. ft. and two outdoor garden and patio spaces were added in 2018, and in 2019, City Living Essentials introduced furnishing dedicated to the consummate urban dweller. Interior designer Robert Breissinger and business partner, Brian Coutu, are excited to participate in the revitalization of Downtown Rochester while answering the needs of a growing residential community. Visitors are drawn from all over to enjoy this unique retail experience, and Rochester’s new Louis M. Slaughter Station sits within walking distance of this trio and neighbor Smith + Associates Architects. “We seek to improve the quality of people’s lives through both an aesthetic and practical approach to design,” stated Coutu. “Home is where we should be most comfortable, surrounded by the things that inspire us and beautify our lives.”
Their approach has resulted in one of the most beautiful stores in the Tri-State area, pairing stunning home furnishings with a gorgeous display setting. The totally renovated, late 1800’s space has restored the building’s original beauty and character with original tin ceilings, hardwood floors, exposed brick and other authentic features. “Rochester has a great history, and Rochesterians have reacted positively to what we are creating here,” shared Coutu. “We invite visitors to interactively reimagine their living spaces.” This opportunity could not be more fitting as customers continue to spend a much greater amount of time at home, not only during their personal time but also while working and schooling. “People have come to view their home as a safe haven,” said Coutu. “We are capable of helping them create the attractive and functional living spaces they deserve,” said Coutu. DL Home & Garden carries several fine home furnishing lines featured in national publications such as Architectural Digest and House Beautiful, bringing these items to Rochester consumers. Additionally, it houses one of the largest fabric libraries north of New York City. Further heightening the shopping experience, DL Home & Garden also carries an extensive selection of candles, handbags, jewelry, lighting, sculpture, original art, and seasonal items such as Christmas ornaments and holiday cards. Every piece in each display is available for purchase. “We provide a variety of essentials to enhance and beautify the lives of our customers,” Coutu said. Breissinger and Coutu provide customers with over 60 years’ combined experience. Drawing from this wealth of knowledge, DL Home & Garden and City Living Essentials carries only high-quality furniture, an investment in the heirlooms of tomorrow. “That is part of our green story: fine furnishings, restoring existing structures, and creating neighborhood gardens in previously unused properties,” said Coutu.“Better made goods are part ofour sustainable future.”
Room Design Tips from the Experts
Create your lookbook. Gather photos, fabric swatches, magazine clippings and whatever else inspires you. As we collaborate with you, this directs us as focal points of color, pattern and style emerge. Then, we are better able to recommend pairing choices that more accurately represent what you would like to experience. Begin with a gorgeous handmade rug. This grounds your room, adding movement and interest as it softens the look of hardwood and tiles floors and serves you well over time. As an artistic focal point, a rug is the first step in building your space from the ground up. Select paint color or wallpaper and fabrics for your upholstery and window treatments. These colors will coordinate the room. With over 60,000 fabric samples, DL Home & Garden offers one of the largest fabric libraries north of New York City. We specialize in helping you imagine and realize your vision. Add the best furnishings you can afford. We are mindful of differing budget capabilities and are careful to offer various price points. Our better-quality furniture lasts longer, becoming heirlooms rather than waste. Choose your lighting. Whether it is a chandelier creating a dramatic viewpoint over a dining table or focused reading lights in a library, lighting is essential for setting the tone in your space. We carry everything from chandeliers to desk lamps, most offering the ambiance of updated LED versions of the Edison bulb. Appreciate. Relax into your comfortable new chair or sofa over a nice glass of wine; dim the lights and enjoy your evening.
Our 11,500 sq. ft. showroom gives inspiration for every room of the house, from traditional to contemporary styles.
